Definitive Arms is proud to offer our Black Finish Treatment. Our finish is achieved through a 7-stage process resulting in a superior dark black parkerized finish. Through our own testing of multiple side by side parts, we have concluded that our finish provides better corrosion resistance then standard parkerizing.
Why use a submerging process for your firearm?
When preparing firearms parts for refinishing it is common practice to use abrasive media blasting to strip, clean, & give a textured (matte) surface for finish to adhere to (particularly when applying spray on finishes).
Something to consider when using media blasting, is all of the areas that will be stripped. The media exits the abrasive blasting gun at a high velocity. As such it will hit a surface and bounce in different directions while maintaining some of its velocity. This causes nooks, crannies, small spaces, and otherwise unreachable surfaces to become stripped down to bare metal (especially so with AKs).
This becomes a problem when applying a spray on finish. Unlike a media blaster, the finish coming from a paint gun does not bounce around and hit areas beyond the direct line of spray. There is some over spray, however it will not reach every area that has been stripped by media blasting. This results in firearms that have exposed areas completely unprotected from rust.
We have received Customer rifles that have rust occurring in areas such as:
- Underneath the Front Trunnion
- underneath the Rear Trunnion
- Underneath the Rails
- Inside of the Bolt & Carrier
- Inside Rear Sight Block
- Inside Gas Tube and Non-Chromed Gas Blocks
- Various other areas that are difficult to spray into without causing excessive build up.
It is highly recommended, especially with AKs, that you have the rifle go through a finishing process that submerges all of the parts. This insures that hard to reach places have an adequate level of protection from corrosion.
Even if you intend to use a spray on finish, it is still recommended you have your AK base coat parkerized. Not to mention, parkerization makes a great surface for spray finishes to adhere to.
